Child spacing: good or bad

How healthy the child becomes may depend on the spacing between the previous pregnancy and the latter.

Child spacing refers to period of time or the interval between one child's birth date until the next one.

It is an essential part of family planning, according to Mayo Clinic. It means figuring how long you need to wait after the first birth before getting pregnant.
A research published in the Journal of American Medical Association in 2006, found that the physical health of the baby is much better if the mother waits a minimum of 18 months after the previous baby before she conceives another.
Recent research suggested that closely spaced pregnancies might be associated with an increased risk of autism in the second child. The risk is high for the pregnancies spaced less than 12 months.
Research had also suggested that beginning pregnancy within six months of a live birth is associated with increased risk of premature birth, low birth weight, congenital disorders and schizophrenia.

According to Mayo Clinic, closely spaced pregnancy might not give the mother enough time to recover from the previous before moving to the next. The nutrients lost during the previous pregnancy and breastfeeding might not be replaced and this may affect the health of the baby. Another study have equally shown that women are often anemic for a good year after a birth because of lots of iron allotted to the baby and placenta and the blood lost during the birth.

A famous Longitudinal stidy found that spacing kids closer than two years apart was a risk factor for both kids apparently because neither child got enough attention from the mother to create mother - child bond that kids need to flourish.
Family Planning experts generally agreed that at least twenty - four months or two years birth interval is important for infant, child and maternal health. Some studies suggest that birth interval less than two years is associated with adverse paternal and maternal outcome. The World Health Organization (WHO has identified birth interval (the period between two consecutive live births) as critical determinant of child mortality risk, recommending that women space their births between three and five years apart to reduce health risks to children and the mothers (WHO 2007).
A Los Angeles Lakers nutrition consultant and the author of Deep Nutrition: Why Your Genes Need Traditional Food pointed out that children who are given proper resources for fetal development are set up with better bone structure, more confidence, and higher intelligence.
A new England Journal of Medicine reports that a minimum of 18 - 24 creates better space between pregnancies to prevent preterm birth, low birth weight, and infant death.
A well spaced pregnancy helps the mother properly care for the first child before getting distracted by the second, thus it's very important that families adopt a good child spacing method.

The World Health Organization, WHO expresses disapproval over new polio cases in Nigeria.

The World Health Organization, WHO has expressed concern over new cases of polio in nigeria. According to Dr Matshidiso Moeti, the Organization's Regional Director for Africa while reacting to this, said: "We are deeply saddened by the news that two Nigerian children have been paralyzed by polio. The Government has made significant strides to stop this paralyzing disease in recent years.
Image result for picture of new polio case in nigeria"The overriding priority now is to rapidly immunize all children around the affected area and ensure that no other children succumb to this terrible disease."

Director of polio eradication at WHO Headquarters, Dr. Michel Zaffran, was also quoted as saying: "We are confident that with a swift response and strong collaboration with the Nigerian Government, we can soon rid the country of polio once and for all. This is an important reminder that the world cannot afford to be complacent as we are on the brink of polio eradication - we will only be done when the entire world has been certified polio-free."
According to WHO, the pattern of the virus suggests a close link to  to a wild poliovirus strain. The strain was last detected in Borno in 2011.

In 2012, it was said that Nigeria accounted for more than half of all polio cases worldwide, however a huge progress was made after then through the combined effort of the government, religious leaders and the health workers as the country recently marked two years without the case of polio.

Increased effort through the establishment of more Emergency Operations Centers at the national and state level and the community involvement, also creating polio awareness will help combat the outbreak

Alfred Ihenkuronye: About two hundred people die annually from food poisionning>>>

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), food containing harmful bacteria, viruses, parasites or chemical substances is responsible for more than 200 diseases, ranging from diarrhoea to cancers.
Image result for picture of plate of food Increasingly, many Nigerian have said to have died from eating contaminated food. Alfred Ihenkuronye, a professor of Food Science and Technology stated recently that no fewer than 200,000 persons die annually in the country as a result of contaminated foods.
According to him, there are various ways through which food can be contaminated, most of which have been traced to the preparation and handling of the food by the food vendors. These should be a source of concern because food poisoning can cause a serious damage and in most cases lead to death.

According toWorld Health Organization , "New threats to food safety are constantly emerging. Changes in food production, distribution and consumption; changes to the environment; new and emerging pathogens; antimicrobial resistance - all pose challenges to national food safety systems".

However, WHO offers five practical guides to food vendors and consumers for handling and preparation: Keep clean, separate raw and cooked food, cook food thoroughly, keep food at safe temperatures, and use safe water and raw materials. What the authorities must now do is a campaign to sensitise the public about these measures.
