Palm wine is a sweet, tasty drink that is gotten from sap of various species of palm.
Multiple reports and information gathered by information reveals that palm wine is high in Amino acids, Potassium, Magnesium, Zinc and iron.

It is one of the most popular drinks among people in west Africa such as Igbos. According to a study published in International Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine, Offering palm wine to another is a longstanding symbol of gratitude and is significant in both business and personal relationships.

Palm wine is the sweet tasty sap gotten from wounded palm trees. It is popular in west Africa and centra Africa. Palm wine comes as fresh and sweet juice but turns sharp and sour taste after undergoing fermentation.

Palm wine can be consumed fresh or fermented. The palm win tapper gets the palm wine from the palm tree by making a hole on the on the palm tree, then a gallon is attached to collect the sap. Palm wine is widely consumed at home and social events.

Palm wine is commonly known as “Mmanya” in Igo land, “Emu” in Yoruba, Banmi in Hausa, Mmin – efit, and Mnin - -ukot in Efik and Ibibio speaking tribe of Nigeria respectively. Palm wine is highly nutritious and which promotes lactation and improves eyesight due to yeast content in it, according a study in Jecajournal.org.

According to informAfrica, multiple reports have revealed that palm wine is high in amino acid, potassium, magnesium, zinc and iron with considerable levels of vitamin B1, B2, B3 and B6.

Another publication on Impact of Technological Diagram on Biochemical and Microbiological Quality of Borassus akeassii Wine Produced Traditionally in Burkina Faso stated that palm wine contains very little reducing sugars such as glucose, fructose, maltose and raffinose [28], and however contains various yeasts and bacteria.

According to L Mbuagbaw in his book “The Palm Wine Trade: Occupational and Health Hazards”, palm wine tapping is a common occupation in many palm-growing regions of the world—mainly non-Islamic countries where alcohol consumption is not religiously prohibited.

They also noted that palm wine is known by a variety of names in different countries including “Matango,” “Fitchuk,” and “Mbu” in Cameroon, “Doka” in Ghana, “Toddy” in India, “Emu” in Nigeria, “Lambanog” in the Phillipines, and “Panam culloo” in China.

A research conducted by A B Cuningham showed that while palm wine is important source of nicotinic and vitamin C, previous studies appear to have overestimated its value as a source of Protein, thiamin and riboflavin. In various traditional African societies, the palm wine plays significant role in customary practices. For instance, palm wine is part of what is required by the elders during marriage.

HEALTH BENEFITS OF PALM WINE

PALM WINE CAN HELP FIGHT AGAINST CANCER –

According to researchers, palm wine contains riboflavin which is known as vitamin B2. This helps to fight against some cancer – causing agents called Free Radicals.
PALM WINE INCREASES EYESIGHT –
Some researchers found that people who got a lot of niacin (Vitamin B3) in their diet had low risk of developing contaracts. While other studies show that people with higher level of niacin have a lower risk of developing Alzheimer.

PALM WINE REDUCES THE RISK OF CARDIO VASCULAR DISEASES –

A research conducted by Lindberg and Ezra in 2008 shows that heart failure can be regulated by drinking moderate amount of palm wine. A study also linked palm wine with low risk of hypertension due to the Potassuim content of it. One of the studies on palm wine pointed that it also contains polyphenols, an antioxidant that prevents heart-related diseases. Also a publication on Journal of Agriculture and Consumer protection referred to palm wine as be a nourishing drink which promotes lactation and improves eyesight due to its yeast content.

PALM WINE COULD IMPROVE LACTATION –

Drinking freshly tapped palm wine is believed to help with milk production. Pregnant women consume it fresh for the sweetness and nutrition while nursing mothers drink it warm to enhance breast milk production, according to a study in Journal of Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology.

PALM WINE BOOST SEX HORMONES –

According to a 2011 study published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine, a daily dose of niacin, also known as vitamin B3, improves erectile function in men with high cholesterol, and also promotes sperm production in men.

OTHER HEALTH BENEFITS –
It also has a refreshing effect and can help relieve the body from the feeling of fatigue. It is suspected to improve brain function due to the vitamin B1 and B6 content of it.
